Eyo Alaketepupa: The Enforcer
The Eyo are believed to be related to departed souls, who move through Lagos to cleanse it of evil and pray for its continued prosperity and peaceful coexistence
Among these figures the Eyo Alaketepupa also known as the Eyo Laba has a unique lineage. They were originally owned by a 19th-century prince from Iseyin, Oyo State, who later became a member of one of the royal households in Lagos, alongside the Oba of Lagos
Dressed in vibrant red headgear with a striking white motif, they embody the role of the raditional plice for other Eyo masquerades on the day of the festival. They also oversee the preparation and installation of the Agodo/Para (a hugely venerated square structure construoted with mats)
Notably, they are the only Eyos brave enough to rub shoulders with the Eyo Adimu, which is often a spectacle.
